Cocktails and Dinosaurs: News and Libations for the Weekend of 01-08-2010

Semi-weekly posts of last weeks news reformulated for easy digestion.

Nick Thorburn + Michael Cera in a Winnipeg Shiners jacket = Awesome! (or the new Islands music video)
  • Alanis Morissette is working an upcoming book she says was inspired by the writings of Jack Kerouac. I can only imagine it covers that time when Dave Coulier abandoned her in Mexico City after she caught dysentery.

  • In the spirit of the title of this post, the top 8 dinosaur discoveries of 2009. You might have read about a few of these, if you weren't too busy updating your facebook status.

  • Scientists have discovered the "world's second most intelligent creatures after humans" are dolphins; bumping chimpanzees down to the number #3 spot. Though I find the conclusions they jump to worrisome:

"Marino and Reiss will present their findings at a conference in San Diego, California, next month, concluding that the new evidence about dolphin intelligence makes it morally repugnant to mistreat them."

So it's cool to club baby seals and incinerate ants with a magnifying glass because they are not as intelligent as humans.
Could it possibly be 'repugnant to mistreat' any animal? Are they worried that these super intelligent dolphins will stage a coup if their rights are not upheld? (via The Daily What)

  • In sad news, the creator of everybody's favorite candy dispensing device, the Pez dispenser, passed away. Curtis Allina died at the age of 87. (via YesButNoButYes)

  • Nobody Likes You. The blog for the curmudgeon inside all of us. (via The Daily What)

  • NavTones a provider of 'turn-by turn voice content for GPS navigation systems' is developing a KITT car voice. If you would like to be addressed directly by Knight Industries Two Thousand (KITT), they are currently accepting names. Personally, I would prefer KITT to address me as Michael.

Libation of the Week: Pink Girlie Vodka Drinks (not a Cosmopolitan though, that's for another week)

I believe it was some sort of pomegranate, mango, pineapple, vodka mixture. I don't really remember. It was a bunch of fruit juice and vodka and it pretty much tasted like candy.
